Today, the NCAA has an uphill battle in hockey, as major arenas, funding and Title IX compliance are required to add teams. Hence, there are just 60 hockey teams in NCAA men’s Division I, mostly east of the Mississippi River. This has created a unique situation in college athletics, where a league in a top sport, (ACHA) exists alongside the NCAA. The ACHA league has grown to nearly 500 men’s and women’s club teams in three divisions and dozens of conferences over the last 25 years. The growth is due to the large number of quality players to stock team rosters and demand from fans for college hockey that has been an untapped resource on college campuses. ACHA teams entertain, sell tickets, apparel and concessions similar to football and basketball. At schools lacking NCAA hockey, the top ACHA teams occupy similar space to a varsity sport. Most ACHA teams fall under school’s rec sports departments, and are self-managed. They hold tryouts, while trying to be inclusive with multiple teams at different levels. In Division 1, many ACHA teams could compete with NCAA teams, and they can play each other, though games are rare.
